I can remember the very first time I watched a Star Wars movie. I was probably six years old and I sat there, enamored with the VHS running, enjoying the opening credits. I think I was able to read the words and then suddenly, the Tantive IV (CR90 corvette for you nerds) flew across the screen with her green lasers shooting at the Devastator, the Imperial Star Destroyer chasing it. I was amazed at this battle.

This quickly became a very important aspect of Star Wars. Space battles, before I gained an appreciation for saber fighting, was actually my favorite aspect of Star Wars. It’s something that, as I have spent a lot of time at TOR forums, is one of the most discussed topics. People want space. They want the opportunity to have their own ships. There are a few things that people want with space. Here are a few:
• Space combat: A mixture of fighters and capital ships going at each other in huge space battles. I see this being most effective in a type of PvP. While it can work with quests, it’ll be most enjoyable, I imagine, if it was forty players vs. forty players in a different assortment of ships based on what you own.
• Travel: Quite frankly, there is nothing more necessary than the need to go from one planet to the next. If I am going to actually be in the Star Wars Universe, I need to be able to make a hyperspace jump from here to there. It’s just the way of Star Wars
• Storage and a Place to Stay: People like the idea of being able to use their ship as a means of storing extra gear as well as a place to stay. While they’re traveling, they can travel around the ship, perhaps craft, and do other things.
I like the idea of there being a space aspect to the game. Whether it is for space combat (which would be awesome) or if it’s just a means of going from one side of the galaxy to the other, I think that space is necessary. Bioware speaks about how they plan on there being many different planets. To do that, you need to be able to travel from place to place.

If they add space, what would you like to see happen? Want there to be space combat or just keep it to travel? I’m real interested to see what exactly is going to happen with the space aspect of things in The Old Republic.
