Creating the Dark Side

It wouldn’t be an effective Star Wars game if the Dark side of the force was not strong, formidable, and more importantly, downright evil looking. Whether the Dark side is evil in your opinion or not doesn’t matter; they have to look the role that is presented to them and that is one of personal achievement over that of everyone around them. Only through victory, shall my chains be broken. Because of this, BioWare had a very intensive job in creating an effective Sith class (or two classes) that would breathe life into the ideals of the Sith, but at the same time, give the player the opportunity of being a hero of that specific group.

According to one of the writers for SWTOR, Neil Pollner, “there were two themes to explore: domination and power.” On one side, you have the Sith who wants to dominate all, conquer all, rule all, and in the end, be the most powerful Sith in the galaxy. This is the Sith Inquisitor. On the other side, though, you have the powerful and strong muscle of the Sith Empire. This is the Sith Warrior. When thinking about it in regards to the movies, you’ve got Palpatine and Vader. But, this does more than just talk about your whether you’re a warrior or a behind the scenes kind of person. These two character types are big personality types for people: aggression or manipulation.

The Sith Warrior is the epitome of aggression. When looking at the designs, he is strong, has armor, and does most of the fighting. He strikes first, thinks later. He might wield two lightsabers, rely heavily on the force choke, and use whatever sort of  aggression he can to get the information or results that he wants. This is pretty much what we see in Darth Vader. If someone disobeys him, he simply raises his hand and the person is choking, hanging in the air, trying to talk, but unable to get many words out.

The Sith Inquisitor, though, is the epitome of manipulation. Looking at the designs, he wears elaborate clothing and, as Jeff Dobson, an art director said, “we really get to go a little bit more crazy with them.” The Inquisitor is interested in the backdoor politics, how to achieve things without having to go lightsaber first, and making deals that will benefit him in the future. Instead of slicing through dozens of Republic soldiers, he might be in a tomb looking for an ancient Sith information to make him stronger.

The ultimate goal for two classes is that players will be able to embark on two totally different stories: one of aggression and one of manipulation. The video below is directly from BioWare. Check it out and then let us know what you think about the two classes. It’s definitely going to be an effective way of having a truly appealing Sith set of classes.
